Abnormalities of heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
Consultants at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals carry out over 500 electrophysiology studies each year to detect abnormal heart rhythms in patients. Procedures to regulate and manage arrhythmias include radio frequency ablation and the fitting of pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).
Narrow or blocked arteries
Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals are home to seven purpose-built catheter laboratories, where each year our consultants carry out over 400 coronary angioplasties (stenting) to help widen arteries.
Clinicians have access to advanced x-ray and 3D imaging facilities to help detect narrow or blocked arteries. Our teams of cardiologists, nurses, radiographers and cardiovascular technicians perform over 3,300 angiograms a year.
The UK's first coronary angioplasty took place at Royal Brompton Hospital in 1980 and the first coronary stent was implanted there in 1988.
Congenital heart disease
We treat congenital heart disease from before birth to adulthood and have one of the largest adult congenital heart disease units in the country. Our experts see over 6,000 adults with congenital disease each year –more than any other hospital in the UK.
The adult congenital heart disease unit is home to ground-breaking research, attracting a large number of clinical fellows from around the world to take part in specialist training and research programmes.
