Biography

Dr James Hull is a consultant respiratory physician based at Royal Brompton Hospital, where he treats private and NHS patients.

Dr Hull completed an undergraduate degree in exercise physiology. Following that, he graduated from St George’s Hospital Medical School in 2000.

In 2010, he completed his PhD in exercise physiology. He then spent time at UCLA, Los Angeles developing further expertise in exercise testing with clinical application.

Recently he was awarded the fellowship status of the American College of Sports Medicine (FACSM). He is also president of the Association for Respiratory Technology and Physiology (ARTP).

Clinical expertise

Dr James Hull is a consultant respiratory physician with areas of expertise in:        

Dr Hull is the clinical lead for the cough, unexplained breathlessness service, and upper airway/vocal cord dysfunction service. 

He specialises in helping to:

  • improve all types of persistent cough, including cough triggered by exercise
  • treat cough associated with troublesome symptoms in the throat
  • determine why people get breathless with physical activity.

He is an international expert in helping athletes with breathing problems and works closely with many of the UK’s top international sports teams and associations. He introduced a new test at the Trust, continuous laryngoscopy during exercise, for the diagnosis of upper airway problems during exercise. 

Dr Hull is co-chair of an expert group called Relacs, which is progressing the management of individuals with large airway collapse with symptoms (LACS) and tracheobronchomalacia.

Research interests

Dr James Hull is actively involved in research to better understand and treat respiratory conditions.

In particular, he is collaborating with the English Institute of Sport on a project aimed at optimising respiratory health in a large cohort of elite athletes known to be susceptible to respiratory illness. The project will evaluate and support improved care in the prevention, detection and diagnosis of respiratory illness in over one hundred athletes from a cross-section of Olympic and Paralympic sports.

Memberships

Dr James Hull is part of the respiratory expert panel at both The English Institute of Sport and The International Olympic Committee, helping to improve respiratory care. He was also previously an expert appointee to the American Thoracic Society guideline committee for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction and the British Thoracic Society group. 

Dr Hull is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.
