Biography

Professor William Man is a consultant chest physician at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals, where he treats private and NHS patients.

He qualified with distinction honours at Imperial College London in 1997. He went on to train in respiratory and general internal medicine at major London teaching hospitals, including Hammersmith, St Mary’s, Royal Brompton and King’s College hospitals.

In 2007, he received his PhD and then in 2013, fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP).

Alongside Professor Man's role at the Trust, he is a professor of respiratory medicine at King’s College London.

Clinical expertise

Professor William Man has particular expertise in: 

He runs respiratory clinics at both Harefield Hospital and Royal Brompton Hospital. He leads ambulatory respiratory services (incorporating pulmonary rehabilitation and home oxygen) at Harefield Hospital, and runs the specialist Covid-19 Recovery Clinic at the Royal Brompton. He is the medical lead for the first nationally accredited pulmonary rehabilitation service in the UK and is the co-chair of the British Thoracic Society Pulmonary Rehabilitation Clinical Statement.

Research interests

Professor William Man is an international authority on pulmonary rehabilitation and COPD, and an author of national and international guidelines. He has been an invited lecturer at major national and international respiratory conferences. 

His work was recognised with a European Respiratory Society COPD research award for outstanding contribution to COPD research in Europe, an American Thoracic Society Career Achievement Award in Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and a Royal College of Physicians/NIHR Clinical Research Network Consultant Research Award

Professor Man’s research group focuses on the phenotyping and non-pharmacological management of patients with chronic respiratory disease, particularly COPD, and is funded by the NIHR, MRC and British Lung Foundation.

Professor William Man also has a research interest in Long Covid and is an executive committee member and the rehabilitation workgroup co-lead for PHOSP-COVID, a consortium of leading researchers and clinicians from across the UK working together to understand and improve long-term health outcomes for patients who have been in hospital with confirmed or suspected COVID-19

Professor Man has received several prestigious research fellowships, including: 

  • a Medical Research Council (MRC) Clinical Research Training Fellowship 
  • a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinician Scientist Award 
  • an MRC New Investigator award 
  • an NIHR Clinical Trials Fellowship.
