Biography

Dr Zdenek Slavik is a consultant paediatric cardiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals, where he treats private and NHS patients.

He graduated from medical school in Prague, Czech Republic, gaining board certification in paediatrics and paediatric cardiology. Then from 1995-97, Dr Slavik was a consultant paediatric intensivist at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester.

In 1997, he was appointed consultant paediatric intensivist and cardiologist at Harefield Hospital. Following that, in 2001, he took up the same position at Royal Brompton Hospital. Dr Slavik has been a consultant paediatric cardiologist at Royal Brompton Hospital since 2005.

Clinical expertise

Dr Zdenek Slavik has specialist expertise in treating patients with congenital and acquired paediatric heart disease.

He is experienced in both non-invasive and invasive diagnostic and interventional cardiology procedures.

Research interests

Dr Zdenek Slavik has a specialist research interest in developing new treatments for neonates, infants and children with congenital heart disease and acquired heart disease, including:

  • treatment of myocardial failure
  • development of biodegradable materials in treatment
  • new hybrid treatment methods for surgical and transcatheter interventional procedures.

He has successfully completed a research project in balloon-dilatable pulmonary arterial banding. This started with bench testing and progressed to animal modelling through to successful clinical use.

Publications

Dr Zdenek Slavik has published more than 80 manuscripts in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

He has authored or co-authored six chapters in medical textbooks about paediatric cardiology and cardiac intensive care.

Teaching

Since 2000, Dr Zdenek Slavik has been a visiting professor of paediatrics at the Charles University Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Czech Republic.

Since 2010, he has been an associate professor of paediatrics at Charles University in Prague.
